  1. Welcome to this demo of the MusicNet CD-ROM!
  2.  
  3. This document describes the functions of the MusicNet CD-ROM and will 
  4. help you get started exploring new music.
  5.  
  6. MusicNet lets you listen to, learn about, and order the latest music 
  7. at your convenience.  The MusicNet CD-ROM contains selections from 
  8. hundreds of the latest releases covering a wide variety of music 
  9. styles.  This premiere issue features selections from Rolling Stone 
  10. magazine's 1994 Rock & Roll Yearbook-the albums selected by Rolling 
  11. Stone as the most significant rock and roll releases from 1994!  You 
  12. can listen to selections from the latest albums, view videos and album
  13. artwork, and get album and artist information including artist 
  14. profiles, discographies, and track listings.

  17. Inside the MusicNet CD-ROM
  18.  
  19. There are four areas in the MusicNet CD-ROM:  MAIN MENU, BROWSE, INFO,
  20. and ORDER.  At the Main Menu, you can move to the Browse and Order 
  21. screens by selecting the buttons labeled Browse and Order.  At any 
  22. other place on the CD-ROM, you can move between these sections by 
  23. holding down the mouse button while pointing at the MusicNet logo in 
  24. the upper right hand corner of each screen.  To go to another section,
  25. scroll down to where you wish to go and release the mouse button.

  27. Also note that every item that can be selected on a screen will be 
  28. highlighted with a thin yellow border when the mouse passes over it; 
  29. the yellow border thickens when the item is selected.

  32. MAIN MENU
  33.  
  34. The Main Menu is the first screen you see after installing the disc.  
  35. It contains buttons for Browse, Order, and Quit, a list of some of 
  36. the artists featured on the disc, and a window showing selections 
  37. from videos featured on the disc.  To browse music or place an order, 
  38. simply click on the Browse or Order button.  Or, you can click on the 
  39. video playing in the window to go directly to that album in Browse.

  42. BROWSE

  44. Use the Browse button to select an album to preview on the MusicNet 
  45. CD-ROM.  From this point you can also compile a shopping list to keep 
  46. track of the albums you want to order.
  47.  
  48. After you select the Browse button the Browse screen appears.  The 
  49. bottom of the screen contains a wall of album covers available for 
  50. previewing in the categories selected.  Holding the mouse button down 
  51. on the View or Style buttons displays a list of the available 
  52. categories.

  54. View categories are:
  55.  
  56. Video:     Albums with video and audio selections on this disc.
  57. Audio:     Albums with audio selections only on this disc.
  58. Phone:     Albums with audio selections available for previewing 
  59.     through the MusicNet phone service. (See MusicNet Phone Service
  60.     for more details.)
  61. Index:     A list of the albums on the disc.  By clicking on the Artist 
  62.     label or Album label above the index, you can sort the list 
  63.     alphabetically by artist name or album title.  You can search 
  64.     for a particular artist or album by simply typing the name on 
  65.     your keyboard. The index automatically moves to that section 
  66.     of the list.  Select an album or artist from the index and it 
  67.     automatically appears as the featured album on the Browse 
  68.     screen.  You can also sort the index by View and Style 
  69.     categories.

  71. Style categories include:
  72.  
  73. Rock:          rock, pop, alternative, hard rock.
  74. Urban:      rap, hip-hop, R&B, soul.
  75. Country:    country, country & western, bluegrass.
  76. Jazz:          be-bop, big band, contemporary.
  77. Blues:      blues,  both contemporary and traditional.
  78. World:      music by indigenous peoples from around the world.
  79. Other:      new age, religious, children╒s, folk, experimental, 
  80.         comedy, dance.
  81. All:          all of the above.

  83. You can filter the albums that appear in the wall of album covers by 
  84. View and Style categories.  For example, if you select both Video 
  85. (from View) and Rock (from Style), the wall of album covers will show 
  86. you all the rock albums on the disc that contain video selections.

  88. To select a specific album to preview, either click on one of the 
  89. album covers in the wall (lower section of the Browse screen) or drag 
  90. the mouse over the wall while holding the mouse button down until an 
  91. album you want to preview appears in the upper part of the screen.  
  92.  
  93. When an album is selected, its album cover, artist name, title, 
  94. tracks available for preview, and price are displayed on the upper 
  95. part of the screen.  The tracks available for preview may include 
  96. video, audio, or phone selections.
  97.  
  98. Video selections: If the track includes a video selection, the video 
  99. icon, shaped like a film strip, appears next to the track title.  By 
  100. selecting either the icon or the track title, a 30-second selection of
  101. the video will play, temporarily replacing the album cover. To stop 
  102. playing the selection, click on the icon or track title again.
  103.  
  104. Audio selections: If the track is an audio selection, the audio icon, 
  105. shaped like a small speaker, appears next to the track title.  By 
  106. selecting either the icon or the track title, a 30-second selection 
  107. from this track will play.  To stop playing the selection, click on the
  108. icon or track title again.
  109.  
  110. Phone selections: An icon shaped like a phone appearing next to a track
  111. title indicates the album is available for previewing only through the
  112. MusicNet phone service (See MusicNet Phone Service for more details.)
  113.  
  114. The Browse screen also includes your Shopping List. This is where you 
  115. can place albums you want to purchase while you continue shopping for 
  116. other albums on the MusicNet CD-ROM.  To place an album on your 
  117. shopping list, click the Add To List button.  The album currently 
  118. featured in the upper part of the Browse screen will be added to your 
  119. list.  You can add to or delete from this list.  To order the albums on
  120. your shopping list, select the Order List button that appears in the 
  121. upper part of the Shopping List.

  126. To get information about an album you've selected, click on the Info 
  127. button.  This screen provides extensive information about the artist 
  128. and album, including artist profiles written by the MusicNet editorial
  129. department, track listings, album credits, and a discography for the 
  130. artist or band.

  132. Special Feature:  This premiere issue of the MusicNet CD-ROM includes 
  133. editorial from Rolling Stone magazine's 1994 Rock & Roll Yearbook!
  134.  
  135. Special rock and read feature: You can listen to music while you read 
  136. about the album by clicking on the Auto-play button. When Auto-play is
  137. enabled, all three tracks from the album you've selected automatically
  138. play in succession while you are reading the information.  To disable 
  139. Auto-play, simply click on the Auto-play button again.

  142. ORDER
  143.  
  144. All of the albums you've placed on your Shopping List will appear on 
  145. your Order List.  You can order the albums on your Order List directly
  146. from MusicNet, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The Order List 
  147. displays the price of the albums and the shipping cost.  For delivery 
  148. to CA or OH add applicable sales tax.  Pricing is subject to change.
  149.  
  150. Shipping is $3.95 for any size order.  Delivery charges are for 
  151. domestic (including Alaska and Hawaii) shipments only.  For shipment 
  152. outside the United States, call 1-800-MUSICNET for information.  All 
  153. albums in stock will be delivered overnight.  Orders can be placed up 
  154. to midnight EST for overnight delivery.  Orders placed on weekends 
  155. (Saturday or Sunday) will be delivered Tuesday.

  157. MusicNet accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.  You
  158. can remove albums from the Order List by first selecting them and then
  159. pressing the Remove button. Albums removed from the Order List are also
  160. automatically removed from the Shopping List.

  162. There are three ways you can send your order to MusicNet:

  164. 1.  On-line:  Your Order List automatically exists on your hard drive 
  165. as a text file.  When you quit the MusicNet CD-ROM, the text file will
  166. appear in the MusicNet Player folder under the name "MusicNet CD Order
  167. (Date)" or "CD Order (Date)."  You can capture this file and e-mail it
  168. to MusicNet.  Please remember to include your name, address, credit 
  169. card information, and your MusicNet membership number (located on the 
  170. packaging for this disc) in the file, as well as a phone number, fax 
  171. number, or on-line address where we can contact you in case there is 
  172. a question about your order.  Remember, MNI cannot be responsible for 
  173. securing credit card information during order transfers.

  186. word processing application (to format this properly, use 9 point 
  187. Courier font) and fax it directly to MusicNet at 408-644-2029.  Please
  188. remember to include your name, address, credit card information, and 
  189. your MusicNet membership number (located on the packaging for this 
  190. disc) on the form, as well as a phone number, fax number, or on-line 
  191. address where we can contact you in case there is a question about your
  192. order.

  197. As a MusicNet CD-ROM subscriber, you automatically receive a free 
  198. membership to the MusicNet phone service, containing over 3,000 albums
  199. to preview and order.  To access the MusicNet phone service in your 
  200. area call one of the numbers listed below:
